San Antonio

Saturday, Feb 6, 2010

We hit the road again this morning headed further south down US281 toward San Antonio.  The day was bright and sunny with the temperature starting out at a pleasant 7 degrees Celsius.  This area of Texas is known as Hill Country and it is exactly as the name suggests.  It consists of limestone hills with deeply carved canyons.  The hills are covered with stands of Live Oak trees and vineyards.  I didn’t think that Texas was such a large wine producing area.

It was only about one and a half drive from Johnson City to San Antonio but we got hung up in traffic – seem like there’s a lot of construction around here – so it was closer to 2 1/2 hours to get to our campsite at the Tejas Valley RV Park. This is a nice little park just west of San Antonio on Potranco Rd.

After lunch we drove into the city without the use of the GPS unit and after about an hour landed up in front of the Alamo and the entrance to the River Walk. I was concentrating on not getting out of my lane (we still had our towing mirrors extended so our truck felt a couple of feet wider).  Janet was able to gawk around and said that it was an absolute “mad house” along the River Walk and at the Alamo.  It was already quite late in the afternoon so we decided to return tomorrow when we have a little more time.

San Antonio seems like a nice city and we will be here till at least next Wednesday.  We don’t have a lot to do here so we will just take it easy.
