Wednesday, May 13,2009 – Day 13
We left Watson Lake, this morning around 09:15, with a brisk temperature of 7C. headed down the road for Whitehorse 283 Miles away. This was basically just a travel day to move us to the next round of sights. This stretch of the Alaska Hwy was great…a few frost heaves, but easily driveable at highway speeds. There were no real tough grades either down or up so it was like a drive in the country. The weather was variable today, but the scenery certainly was not. I understand now why people make this trip, it is almost like a pilgrimage. Every turn in the road offers a new vista that can take your breath away. I can just imagine how nice it would be when everything is actually green.
We are still getting snow in the mountain passes but it melts almost immediately. If we were doing this again, we would likely choose a departure date from Winnipeg around the Victoria Day weekend. That would give things a chance to green up a bit, but with Kevin moving to Kelowna this worked out for all of us.
We tried a few campgrounds on the outskirts of Whitehorse, before settling in at the Hi Country RV Park , We have full hook-up including cable, water, sewer and electric AND the Wi-Fi signal actually works. Many of the parks that offer free Wi-Fi have poor signals and you constantly drop your connection. This park has repeaters throughout the park giving everyone a very strong signal. Great facilities – The best park that we have stayed in so far. We will be here for at least 4 nights. We want to take in as many sites in Whitehorse as possible and then have some down-time before we head down to Skagway, Alaska just 180 Km away.
By the way. Sunset tonight is 22:32
